About Us
Broadway Shoe Repair is a local family owned and operated business in the heart of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and strives to offer customers quality footwear and accessories that are durable, repairable, and long-lasting.
Allan Wickstrom purchased 'Nu-Way Shoe Repair' in 1983, and changed the name to the Broadway Shoe Repair. The business initially focused on the repair, with a very small inventory of retail sales; from dress shoes to lineman boots.
Allan introduced the Birkenstock brand to Broadway in 1985. He started with an order for twelve pairs of sandals, and over the years the store transformed into the Birkenstock hot spot for the Saskatoon and surrounding area.
For 17 years, Allan ran the Broadway Shoe Repair out of 636 Broadway Avenue while he and wife, Ailsa Watkinson, raised three boys, Sheldon, Jeffrey, and David. From a young age, all of the boys had a lot of interaction with the shop; all three of them worked at the shop through their high school years. In 2000, Allan purchased the building next door that belonged to the Broadway Book Merchants. 638 Broadway Avenue has been the home of the Broadway Shoe Repair ever since. The store has evolved over the years: repair remained consistent, but the sales floor of the Broadway Shoe Repair expanded and changed.
Shortly after purchasing the building, Allan brought the Blundstone brand to Saskatoon after a customer who spent time in Australia suggested that Allan look into the high-quality Australian brand of slip-on boots.
Allan and Ailsa’s middle son, Jeffrey, continued to work at the Broadway Shoe Repair after high school; managing both the repair area and retail side of the store. Jeffrey purchased the business from his father and became the proud owner of the store in 2011.
Since 2011, Jeffrey has aimed to keep the store as true to the environment he grew up in: offering quality products, affordable repairs, and friendly service. The Broadway Shoe Repair has become the place to go for Birkenstock, Blundstone, El Naturalista, and Darn Tough Socks. The selection is one of the best across the prairies.
HISTORY OF THE SHOP
Around 1930, a man named Isaac Mazurik started a shoe repair business on the back porch of his home near 12th Street and Clarence Ave. In 1949, the business outgrew the space and was moved to a building at the 5 corners (12th and Broadway Avenue). The newly established 'Nu-Way Shoe Repair' moved around the Broadway District before settling at 636 Broadway Avenue, where Hats & That now resides.Allan Wickstrom purchased 'Nu-Way Shoe Repair' in 1983, and changed the name to the Broadway Shoe Repair.
